This program, developed in 1970 by Thomas W. Phelan, Ph.D., a clinical psychologist from Glen Ellyn, Illinois, has been revised to create the 4th edition of 1-2-3 Magic Effective Discipline for Children 2—12 years.
The book has sold over 1, 250, 000 copies and has consistently ranked #1 child discipline book on Amazon.com. The basis of the program is enhanced in the 4th edition by continuing to use straight forward methods for managing the behaviour of children from 2 to 12 years, including special needs children.
While the original concept of the rule for “No Talking, No Emotion” is still a strong strategy within the program, the latest edition of 1-2-3 Magic Effective Discipline for 2 - 12 has kept up with changes in parenting by redefining “The Three Parenting Jobs”:
*Managing Stop Behaviour;
*Encouraging Start Behaviour;
The program now includes practical ways to modify behaviour through counting and consequences; routine and direction; knowing when to talk and how to hold a family meeting to problem solve together while using sympathetic listening and positive reinforcement. The outcome is strength-based, so less time and effort is being used on discipline allowing the family more time to spend on fun. To keep up with the ever changing world, the program now deals with handling issues concerning tweens, technology and time wasters.
The use of the program makes a dramatic and positive difference to families in a short amount of time!
While there are many good parenting programs available, Sue Suchocki chose to provide the material from 1-2-3 Magic Effective Discipline for 2 - 12 for Applied Techniques Training after using the the program with her own children aged 4 and 7 since 1997. Having raised two children, (one with special needs) with her husband while volunteering and working with children in Education Support (Disabilities) and families through Child Safety, Sue started her own business, Applied Techniques Training in 2010.
