How much does a 3-year-old brain weigh?A new born babies brain weighs 400g while an adult brain is 1.4 kg. Up until the 1960’s, it was thought that the brain only grew during childhood with the most growth being by the age of 3 when the brain weighs 1.1kg! DOES THE BRAIN STOP GROWING?It is true that in the early years, the brain does the most growing. We know now that the brain continues to change throughout adolescence and adulthood. As we learn new things, we can create and strengthen neural pathways and networks in the brain. IS YOUR BRAIN LIKE A PIECE OF PLASTIC THAT KEEPS EXPANDING?Neuro describes the nervous system in the brain. Plasticity might make us think of the brain as being “plastic”. The definition of plasticity is, "when something can be shaped into something else or “moulded” without it breaking". As we gain new experiences as adults, some connections are strengthened while others are eliminated. WHAT CAN WE DO TO KEEP CHANGING OUR BRAIN?1. Adequate sleep to reset your brain connections 2. Reading 3. Movement and exercise….. HOW CAN APPLIED TECHNIQUES TRAINING PROGRAMS HELP WITH NEUROPLASTICITY?Life-long learning is important for brain development, but if you have an interest in the topic, you are more likely to focus, which will enhance your neuroplasticity. Look at the ideas and solutions offered in ADHD/ASD – The Game Plan, SIMPLY 1-2-3 Behaviour Support 3 to 11-year-old for parents and carers or teachers and educators and SURVIVING YOUR ADOLESCENTS workshops.
Stress diminishes neuroplasticity. Emotional Freedom Techniques is a gentle, non-invasive technique to identify where your stress is coming. EFT Tapping! workshops help you to change old patterns by using somatic stimulation by tapping on “acupressure” points on the face and upper body while saying exactly how you are feeling. It’s hard to feel bad when you are feeling good! So, as adults, life-long learning helps us to change our brains to adapt to the changing environment. These changes happen whether we want it to or not, so it is essential to find things that keep you motivated and alert to get the most out of your brain! THOUGHT FIELD THERAPY
I want to take you on a journey that started with a technique called Thought Field Therapy. TFT was developed by Psychologist, Dr Roger Callahan over 30 years ago. TFT was based on applied kinesiology and physics, which was then aligned with the Chinese philosophy of Chi by combining tapping with two fingers on certain parts of the body. DEVELOPMENT OF EFT Gary Craig, a student of Roger Callahan's, modified these techniques to develop what is known today as Emotional Freedom Techniques, EFT or simply as "Tapping". This technique was introduced in 1995 after Gary Craig very generously shared it with the public. I first trained in EFT through Pamela O'Leary - Guided Solutions and completed studies as a student of Gary Craig Level I to IV in 2009. SPREADING OF EFT Elements of EFT have been picked up and used forming hybrids of the technique which people like to refer to as their own modality. Clinical EFT is used by Dr Dawson Church - EFT Universe. I would suggest that even the purest EFT practitioner has their own twist or uses EFT in conjunction with other modalities. THE EXCITEMENT AROUND EFT The most exciting news around EFT is the evidence-based research that had come through the USA including papers by Dr Dawson Church - EFT Universe. Now, our very own Australian research professor Dr Peta Stapleton from Bond University is producing world-renowned research in the area of EFT. Dr Peta has specialised in the field of eating disorders and well as other trauma. (https://works.bepress.com/peta_stapleton/). This research has seen EFT Tapping more widely accepted throughout the medical and allied health professions and used more by complementary therapy practitioners. I met Dr Peta Stapleton in 2016 and completed my EFT Universe Clinical EFT Practitioner Certification in 2018 with Dr Peta Stapleton as my mentor. WHO CAN USE EFT? EFT can be used with children, teens and adults to help them find their biggest problem, work out who this problem is with and what happened to cause the problem. Together, we work out a number between 0 and 10 to decide how bad the problem really is and acknowledge these feelings while tapping on the side of hand point. HOW DOES EFT WORK? We then complete a tapping round on 4 (kids) to 8 (adults) points on the face and upper body while using words or short phrases about the problem, the person involved and the cause of the problem to help lessen the emotions around the problem. HOW DO WE KNOW IF EFT WORKED? We test the number between 0 and 10 after each tapping round. As the numbers get lower or closer to 0, we know that EFT is working for you. EFT can work for anyone who is willing to learn and use it correctly. An EFT practitioner may be required if the issue is too difficult to handle. Applied Techniques Training is affiliated with Peta Stapleton's "Tapping in the Classroom" online training course. I want you to take a walk in the rain with me. Under your umbrella, are you protecting yourself as a person who is a bully, being bullied or a bystander?
A large number of emotions can be put into 7 categories of “umbrella” emotions. These include:
A word about negative emotions and anger: We are taught that negative emotions are not acceptable. We are told that it is only OK to show positive emotions, so we are not well practiced in dealing with unpleasant emotions or handling difficult situations. Try pushing a beach ball down into a full tub of water. What happens to it? That's right, it bounces back and hits you in the face. This is what happens when we try to push our negative emotions away or "sweep" them under the carpet. A lot of people go straight to the emotion of anger because that don’t know what to name how they are really feeling. They may actually be disappointed, frustrated or perhaps feeling socially awkward. There are some people, for example, people with ADHD or ASD or social anxieties, who have difficulty reading social cues and don’t know how to interact well with others. This can look like behavioural issues such as pushing in or taking over or controlling the situation which could be seen as bullying behaviour. It is the frustration of not fitting in which leads to anger and maybe aggressive or bullying behaviour. Life’s stresses: What pressures are we putting on others, or what expectations do they have on themselves? What causes a person to feel as though they don’t have any control? Why do they feel that they need to regain control through inappropriate social behaviour? Be aware of where these pressures are coming from and explore techniques to reduce the amount of daily stress. Learn to love and accept yourself or other's just the way they are so that being "enough" is enough. Chill out! Relaxation, Meditation and Emotional Freedom Techniques Tapping! are all ways to lessen anxiety and stress and bring balance and clarity back into a person’s life. With Emotional Freedom Techniques Tapping! you can help identify the problem by asking three easy questions.
Identifying the problem: Once you identify the problem and break it down, it is much easier to deal with which will again bring happiness, peace and fun back into your life.
