THOUGHT FIELD THERAPY
I want to take you on a journey that started with a technique called Thought Field Therapy. TFT was developed by Psychologist, Dr Roger Callahan over 30 years ago. TFT was based on applied kinesiology and physics, which was then aligned with the Chinese philosophy of Chi by combining tapping with two fingers on certain parts of the body.
DEVELOPMENT OF EFT
Gary Craig, a student of Roger Callahan's, modified these techniques to develop what is known today as Emotional Freedom Techniques, EFT or simply as "Tapping". This technique was introduced in 1995 after Gary Craig very generously shared it with the public. I first trained in EFT through Pamela O'Leary - Guided Solutions and completed studies as a student of Gary Craig Level I to IV in 2009.
SPREADING OF EFT
Elements of EFT have been picked up and used forming hybrids of the technique which people like to refer to as their own modality. Clinical EFT is used by Dr Dawson Church - EFT Universe. I would suggest that even the purest EFT practitioner has their own twist or uses EFT in conjunction with other modalities.
THE EXCITEMENT AROUND EFT
The most exciting news around EFT is the evidence-based research that had come through the USA including papers by Dr Dawson Church - EFT Universe. Now, our very own Australian research professor Dr Peta Stapleton from Bond University is producing world-renowned research in the area of EFT. Dr Peta has specialised in the field of eating disorders and well as other trauma. (https://works.bepress.com/peta_stapleton/). This research has seen EFT Tapping more widely accepted throughout the medical and allied health professions and used more by complementary therapy practitioners. I met Dr Peta Stapleton in 2016 and completed my EFT Universe Clinical EFT Practitioner Certification in 2018 with Dr Peta Stapleton as my mentor.
WHO CAN USE EFT?
EFT can be used with children, teens and adults to help them find their biggest problem, work out who this problem is with and what happened to cause the problem. Together, we work out a number between 0 and 10 to decide how bad the problem really is and acknowledge these feelings while tapping on the side of hand point.
HOW DOES EFT WORK?
We then complete a tapping round on 4 (kids) to 8 (adults) points on the face and upper body while using words or short phrases about the problem, the person involved and the cause of the problem to help lessen the emotions around the problem.
HOW DO WE KNOW IF EFT WORKED?
We test the number between 0 and 10 after each tapping round. As the numbers get lower or closer to 0, we know that EFT is working for you. EFT can work for anyone who is willing to learn and use it correctly. An EFT practitioner may be required if the issue is too difficult to handle.
